While his comment was certainly offensive, that's not what I'm talking about. In pursuit of the snappy, clever comment, speakers utter words before they think about the unintended consequences. There's a sound reason why thought has to travel to your mouth to be expressed...it gives you a moment to consider the ramifications of your words. Clearly Imus missed this step. It's unlikely that he was trying to get fired...the unintended consequence.
It just makes sense to anticipate the possible audience reactions to your remarks...BEFORE making them. The audience is ultimately who determines what is and isn't acceptable.
